WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Harvest Hope Food Bank has a new site that will help them feed the hungry in our community with fresh food.
The South Carolina Farmers Market is getting a special stall so vendors can donate fresh produce.
South Carolina Agriculture Commissioner Hugh Weathers says the new stall put in place Thursday allows farmers to share their bounty with families who need it.
Skot Garrick with Harvest Hope said, “It’s going to make a huge difference because fresh produce fresh vegetables fresh fruit are very important in providing a nutritional balance for families that are struggling.”
The food bank will collect the fresh produce on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The state Agriculture Department will provide the stall space, signs, pallets, and a forklift to load products onto Harvest Hope's truck.
Harvest Hope distributes food in a 20 county area throughout central South Carolina. According to Garrick, they fed 2.5 million people last year.
