COLUMBIA (WACH)--Mayor Steve Benjamin visited the Children's Garden childcare center Monday morning for an up close and personal experience on the center's services and day to day routine.

Children's Garden is a DSS licensed, ABC Enchanced, NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited childcare center for homeless, needy, and in crisis children.  The center provides quality childcare for young children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old and has been operating since 1990.

Monday morning Mayor Steve Benjamin met with the center's director Harriet Atkinson to learn more about the services and benefits of Children's Garden.  He also toured the center sitting in on a cookie-designing class as well as touring the garden, where natural herbs are planted by the older children.

"We've gotta make sure that even in these austere times in which we live," said Mayor Benjamin, "when the money is just not always there, there's just not enough money, we've gotta make sure that the most important things continue to matter and we continue to support them like the children's garden."

Children's Garden relies on funding through community support, private foundations, and federal, state, and local grants.
