COLUMBIA (WACH) -- The city of Columbia is getting a new community garden.  Community leaders met Friday morning to announce the site of a new fruit orchard that was won through online citizen voting.

Mayor Steve Benjamin and councilmembers say the orchard will be planted at Owens Field Park on Jim Hamilton Boulevard in the Rosewood area.

It's unsure what type of fruit will be grown at this time.

The land is owned by Richland 1 School District and will be used as an opportunity for learning in the field.

The free fruit orchard is sponsored by Communities Take Root, Edys Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation.  Only 20 cities were awarded the orchards as part of the contest.
