COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Deputies arrested 21-year-old Whitney Wilson Tuesday afternoon after, they say, she was involved in a good deed turned bad.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department says Wilson offered to help Linda Canady shop for groceries at the Food Lion on St. Andrews Road in Columbia.

After shopping and bagging the groceries for nearly two hours with Canady, Wilson helped load the bags into her car.

"I am used to that," states Canady.  "People see me and know that I am handicap."

According to Investigators, Wilson then took a can from one of the bags and hit Canady in the head before taking her wallet and running toward the nearby Landmark Apartments.

"I didn't even see it coming," recalls Canady.

Canady, however, did not want to be a victim.  She followed Wilson to the housing complex.

Deputies eventually arrested Wilson after receiving surveillance video from Food Lion and tips from nearby businesses.  Wilson faces assault and armed robbery charges.

“This is an excellent example of how successful cooperation between the public can be," says Sheriff James Metts.  "The cooperation of Food Lion and other area businesses were essential in the capture of Ms. Wilson."

The incident resulted in Canady having 19 stitches in her head and several bruises.

"Why did she have to do that to me?" Canady asked.  "I thought we were friends."

Although Canady's spirit remain high, she says her left of trust in people is the lowest its ever been.

Do incidents like this make you worry about your own safety in public or do you think this is an isolated incident?
