COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It's another day and the National Weather Service has issued another Heat Advisory for the Midlands.
As scorching high temperatures in the 90s combine with steamy dewpoints in the low 70s, heat index values elevate into the dangerous category. The Heat Index Value is also known as the 'feels like' temperatures. Anything above 105 is dangerous to the human body.
Monday across the Midlands feels like temperatures were inching close to 110 degrees. Similar conditions are expected for Tuesday. Fortunately, temperatures should fall a few degrees by the weekend. The temporary break isn't expected to last long.
It's been a record setting summer no matter what factor you analyze. We've already had 15 triple digit high temperature days at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Since June 1st, we've only had two days, both in July, with high temperatures in the 80s. The hottest high temperature recorded were a pair of 104 degree days in mid-July while the hottest 'feels like' temperature was 116.
The statewide drought continues to be compounded by the problem. Most of the Midlands falls under the second stage of drought while the far northeastern corner falls under the severe stage of drought. At the Columbia Metropolitan Airport, which is under a moderate stage of drought, the Midlands is close to three inches behind the annual norm.
