ORANGEBURG (WACH) -- A national financial magazine has given South Carolina university high honors.

Forbes ranks South Carolina State University as one of the top schools in the South in its 2011 Best Colleges List.  In addition, the school garnered the classification as the state's top historically black school for research.

SC State came in at 584 of the 650 institutions ranked nationwide, 175 in the South and 223 in research universities.  The ranks are based on categories including post graduate success, student satisfaction, debt, four-year graduation rate and competitive awards.

“As a land-grant University, we pride ourselves on fulfilling the distinct mission of offering educational, research and outreach services that will have a direct benefit in our state and abroad,” said President George E. Cooper.  “Our most recent initiative, $50 Million by 2012, is just one of many efforts to enhance our research activities. Receiving this recognition by Forbes magazine is truly an honor and solidifies the hard work and success we’ve achieved thus far.”
