Socastee teenager trial set for Monday

SOCASTEE, S.C. (WPDE) -- The trial for a 15-year-old Socastee High student accused of shooting at the school resource officer and bringing bombs to school will begin Monday morning.

Christian Helms is charged with attempted murder and three counts of possession of a manufactured bomb device.

He's accused of shooting at Officer Erik Karney. Shrapnel wounded Karney's face.

Police say Helms also brought bombs to school in his backpack.

In March, Family Court Judge Georgia Anderson decided that Helms would be tried as an adult for the charges he faces.

Since the March decision, Helms has remained at the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia, where he's been treated for mental health issues.
