COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus has been suspended indefinitely from the Gamecocks after being arrested and charged with nuisance conduct.

"G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved," said Head Coach Steve Spurrier. "We are disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly."

Greenville police say Mangus was caught urinating in public in Greenville.

Mangus was taken to the Greenville County jail Monday night. Police spokesman Sgt. Jason Rampey did not know if Mangus remained in jail Tuesday.

“Last night I acted irresponsibly and I deeply regret my actions," Mangus said Tuesday.  "I take full responsibility. I would like to publicly apologize to Coach Spurrier, Eric Hyman, the entire team, and everyone associated with the University of South Carolina.”

South Carolina athletic spokesman Steve Fink said team policy calls for any player arrested to be immediately suspended from the team.

The quarterback position is no stranger to controversy at USC. Starting quarterback Stephen Garcia has been suspended five times in his career. Most recently Garcia was suspended on April 6 after an incident at a life skills seminar. Spurrier says Garcia has several confidential guidelines to adhere to in order to remain a member of the team.

The police report said Mangus was unsteady on his feet with a strong smell of alcoholic beverages. Mangus faces a $470 fine if he is convicted.

Mangus is in his third season at South Carolina. It was unclear if he has an attorney.

Earlier this week the Gamecocks were picked to win the SEC East at the Southeastern Conference Media Days, a first for the program.  The defending SEC East champs beat out Georgia and Florida as the favorite.
