COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- After back-to-back days of triple digit highs and Excessive Heat Warnings, the Midlands will experience some “relief” from the heat today.
A cold front has finally moved into the area and has become stationary over the Midlands. This will provide scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. Northerly winds will help keep highs in the mid 90s, but humidity will still be high so heat indices will climb to around 105 degrees today.
However, the scattered thunderstorms mentioned will provide a nice cool down for areas that see these storms.
As we head into the weekend highs will actually fall below average, around 90, along with lower humidity. We’ll also keep a chance for scattered storms in the forecast.
While the heat may have passed, it's leaving a lasting impact on the record books.
In 20 years of record keeping, it has never felt hotter anywhere in South Carolina than it felt in Mount Pleasant this week.
The National Weather Service recorded a heat index of 124 degrees at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Pleasant.
