COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Authorities have blocked a portion of Gervais Street in downtown Columbia, after a vehicle downed a utility pole.

Columbia police say the wreck happened a little after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Gervais and Bull Streets.  A preliminary report shows the driver was traveling westbound when they lost control of the vehicle and hit the pole, knocking power lines into the street.

Emergency crews are currently at the scene and police are directing traffic.  Traffic lights aren't working properly in the area because of the crash.

It is unknown when the area will be re-opened to motorists.  Police are asking motorists to stay away from the area.

Officials say the driver was transported to the hospital, but do not think his injuries are life threatening.
