COLUBMIA (WACH) -- The Office of Regulatory Staff is set to hold a hearing Wednesday night concerning a water rate increase for Carolina Water Service customers.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at the Lexington County Tennis Complex on Oak Drive.

The discussion will be over the application filed by Carolina Water Service to raise water and sewer rates.  CWS wants an 80 percent increase in water rates and a 14 percent hike in sewer rates.

Sen. Jake Knotts requested the agency hold a public hearing and is urging residents to attend.

"It is imperative that you attend and be prepared to participate," Knotts said in an email Tuesday.  "I would also encourage you to spread the word to your neighbors, friends and family –  in all probability if we don’t have a good turnout, their request ...will go through. "

Officials say over 200 protest letters have been received.
