SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- Shaw Air Force Base, the Third Army and the city of Sumter are celebrating Independence Day with music, military displays and a fireworks display.

Air Force spokeswoman Senior Airman Alexandria Mosness said Monday's event begins at 5 p.m. and lasts until 11 p.m. at Sumter's Dillon Park.

The Air Force Blue Aces Band will perform, soldiers from the newly-arrived Third Army are presenting military displays and a 30-minute fireworks display is set for 9:30 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Those attending are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs, but coolers and pets aren't allowed.

Mosness says 35,000 people are expected.
