SUMTER, S.C. (AP) -- A Richland County deputy has been injured and another man killed in a car crash near Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter.

Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock says the wreck happened at the intersection of Highway 378 and US Highway 441 around 10:20 a.m. Thursday.

Bullock says 67-year old Philip T. Hawkins of Sumter died at the scene. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis says 36-year-old Richland County Deputy George Charles Mickens was taken by helicopter to Palmetto Richland Hospital.

A Richland County Sheriff's Department spokesman says Mickens was on duty and was on his way to court when the crash happened. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating, and Mickens' condition has not been released.
