LUGOFF (WACH) -- Over $600,000 in counterfeit checks have been taken off the streets after a bust in Kershaw County earlier this week.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigators arrested 63-year-old Norman Elliot at his home in Lugoff Monday.

Sheriff Jim Matthews says customs officials stopped a package set for delivery to Elliot coming from Nigeria.  The package included almost 200 counterfeit checks worth over $550,000.

When investigators took Elliot into custody after delivering the package they found an additional 21 checks worth nearly $50,000.

“The criminal element in our county should be very concerned once they realize that the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with other agencies to make our community safer,” Sheriff Matthews says.

Elliot is being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center.  His case will be ruled on in federal court.
