COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Senators are scheduled to resume debate on drawing lines for U.S. House seats for South Carolina.

Tuesday's debate would open with little progress made on dozens of amendments to how the new U.S. House map will look. That includes where the Senate wants to put a new 7th District.

Redistricting is required every decade to account for population shifts in the census. Population gains gave South Carolina a new House seat.

The starting point for debate anchors the new seat in Horry and Florence counties and other counties near the state's northeastern corner on the North Carolina state border.

The major debate for now focuses on which counties are to be included in the new district.

The House already has approved its version of the district lines.
