CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is showing reporters what's being done to improve drainage on one of South Carolina's major north-south highways.
The mayor leads a tour Friday of the construction site on U.S. 17.
Charleston last year received $10 million in federal stimulus money to improve drainage on the highway where it crosses the Charleston peninsula. The road was built on filled-in creeks and often floods in heavy rains.
Riley says the work and a city drainage project should ease flooding on the road, which is the main north-south route along the South Carolina coast.
