CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A crumbling 19th century fort in Charleston Harbor has been sold to the Sons of Confederate Veterans for $10.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports the heritage group wants to preserve Castle Pinckney, the first Union fort seized by Confederates before the Civil War.

The South Carolina State Ports Authority had been approached by several people who wanted to develop the site. The ports authority acquired the site in 1958 as a site to dump silt dredged from the harbor but it was never used for that.

The ports authority gave Castle Pinckney to the Shriners in 1964, but it was returned the following year. The authority also gave the property to another Sons of Confederate Veterans group in 1969, but it was again returned 15 years later.
