Residents of South Carolina's northeastern counties packed a Senate redistricting hearing and asked lawmakers to create a new U.S. House district that keeps their counties together.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee is discussing where a new U.S. House district will be located as it redraws South Carolina election boundaries.
Tuesday's hearing comes after a redistricting subcommittee approved a plan that would put that new district in the state's northeastern corner along the coast and on the state line with North Carolina.
The South Carolina House has given preliminary approval to new state Senate districts based on the latest census figures.
Redistricting is required every decade to reflect population changes from the census. South Carolina picked up a seventh district because of population increases.
Population gains netted South Carolina the seventh district seat.
The panel rejected plans submitted by the American Civil Liberties Union and the state Democratic Party.
