HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is going to Hilton Head Island to make an announcement concerning the Heritage Classic golf tournament.
Town and tournament officials have said the announcement of a new title sponsor for the PGA event is imminent. Haley has set an early afternoon news conference Thursday on the resort island.
Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin said Wednesday the foundation that puts on the annual professional golf tournament has asked the town to buy TV advertising spots for the next five years. He says that could signal a sponsorship deal.
Town council is to meet Thursday to discuss the matter and the mayor says an announcement of a sponsor could come Friday.
Foundation head Simon Frasier told The Associated Press an announcement was imminent and could come Thursday. Neither official would comment on who a sponsor might be.
The tournament has been without a title sponsor since Verizon pulled out after the 2010 Heritage.
