COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Fifteen percent of South Carolina adults can't read or write according to a recent U.S. Education Department Study.

To help combat illiteracy the Central Community Foundation is hosting focus groups this week to discuss Literacy 2030.

The initiative aims to make South Carolina 100 percent literate in 20 years.

"We want to be able to rewrite the future of literacy in South Carolina because as it is now, it's sort of a dismal future, but if we're able to transform and rewrite it, we can reach 100 percent by 2030," Organizer Ellen Hinrichs says.

Central Community Foundation will hold similar events in five more counties over the next few days.
