WEST COLUMBIA (WACH) -- State agriculture officials are marking a milestone by giving away free sandwiches this Saturday.

To celebrate the fourth anniversary of the Certified SC program, South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers says the department is giving away 1,000 BLT sandwiches at the State Farmers Market.

The Department of Agriculture, SC Pork Board and SC Fruit and Vegetable Association want to show off the fruits, and vegetables and meats, of South Carolinian's labor.

The bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwiches will be available to visitors in the north farmer's shed starting at 11 a.m. on June 18.  All ingredients come from local growers and farmers and are certified SC.

“One BLT sandwich represents three of the four food groups in the new MyPlate food guide, Weathers explains.  "Add a fruit like tasty peaches or a sweet slice of watermelon and a glass of cold milk
and the plate is complete. It’s simple to make a meal from Certified SC produce and products.”

Commissioner Weathers explains right now is the peak season for summer produce in South Carolina.

The new South Carolina Farmer's Market is located at 3483 Charleston Highway in West Columbia.
