FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) -- A half-dozen drill sergeants who put fear in the hearts of the Army's newest recruits are going to get a dose of their own medicine during a national competition in South Carolina.

Army spokesman Ray Harp said Tuesday six top drill sergeants will come to Fort Jackson outside Columbia for a week-long series of exams and physical fitness tests. The tests run from before dawn until well into the night over five days.

The drill sergeants are tested on how well they instruct new soldiers, on their physical fitness and their knowledge of leadership issues and training tactics.

Two winners, one from active duty and one from the reserve ranks, will be chosen as drill sergeants of the year.
