GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A father in Travelers Rest has been charged with homicide by child abuse in the suffocation death of his 1-year-old daughter.

Greenville County authorities say Nevaeh Sprouse was taken to the hospital last month after her mother said she choked while drinking a glass of tea. The child died two days later.

But an arrest warrant says 26-year-old James Allen Johnson gave investigators a written statement saying he suffocated the girl.

Authorities say an autopsy found bruises and other signs of abuse and matched information Johnson told investigators.

Johnson is being held without bond in the Greenville County jail. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
