COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina legislators are asking for an audit of the inspector general's office, days after it was reported the office created by Gov. Nikki Haley was vacated.
Five Democratic House members sent a letter to the Legislative Audit Council on Thursday asking for the audit. The request is signed by Reps. Boyd Brown, Todd Rutherford, Bakari Sellers, James Smith and Leon Stavrinakis.
The state's first inspector general confirmed Tuesday he quietly resigned six weeks ago amid frustration about setting up the office. Haley created it by executive order in March.
Haley picked George Schroeder for the $110,000-a-year job. Schroeder was the former director of the Legislative Audit Council.
The request seeks a detailed accounting of what was spent, the office's accomplishments and why legislators weren't informed of Schroeder's departure.
