GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Lawyers for the South Carolina Republican Party want a federal judge to reconsider her ruling that voters should not have to register with a party before voting in a primary.

Court papers obtained byThe Greenville News show GOP attorney's asked U.S. District Judge Michelle Childs to clarify whether state law allowing open voting in primaries might be unconstitutional if applied in the specific case of Republicans.

Childs ruled in April that Republicans have other options like conventions or petitions if they don't want outsiders to choose nominees.

The GOP is trying to close its primary before having an expected first-in-the-South vote for the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.
