COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Award-winning poet Nikki Giovanni is coming to Columbia to give the keynote speech at a school fundraiser and sign copies of her books.
The Richland 1 school district says in a release that Giovanni will speak at 6 p.m. Wednesday at W.G. Sanders Middle School in Columbia. Her appearance is part of the school's Community Partnership Gala. Earlier in the day, Giovanni will be working with the school's students and staff on poetry writing.
The event will also include student performances.
Giovanni, who has written more than 30 books, is currently a professor at Virginia Tech.
Admission to the gala is $20. Profits will go toward the school's literacy initiatives.
