MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WACH, AP) -- New York City firefighters are presenting a portion of a beam from the fallen World Trade Center to officials in Myrtle Beach.
The Wednesday presentation to city officials and representatives of the tourism community comes prior to the 10th anniversary of the attack on the twin towers.
It's part of events surrounding the annual Fire Department of New York 9/11 Memorial Golf Tournament that has been held on Myrtle Beach area golf courses every year since the attack.
More than 800 firefighters from 15 states and Canada are taking part in the tournament that began Sunday and continues through Thursday.
Meanwhile, back here in the Midlands, a memorial is being put together in front of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center using beams from the World Trade Center.
Organizers say they need to raise more than $170,000 for the project and hopes to unveil the memorial in Columbia on August 11.
Memorial organizers have received significant assistance from Midlands businesses, but are also appealing to the general public to help them raise money to help complete the project.
If you are interested in learning more about the memorial project or would like to offer assistance you can call the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center at 803-545-0062 or click here.
