COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Months of planning, weeks of practice, and lots of fund raising all came down to the American Lung Association's, 2nd annual Fight For Air Climb, up the 25 floors of the Capital Center in Downtown Columbia on Saturday morning.
American Lung Association Regional Director Katie Bullard was proud to say that nearly 100 people, including local fire fighters and community members all accepted the challenge, created teams, and began to plan their attack of the four hundred and seventy-nine stairs, that make up the tallest building in South Carolina.
The Firefighters, from Irmo, Lexington, Columbia, and even from departments as far away as Virginia, suited up in full turn-out gear, including helmets, masks, oxygen, jackets, and boots, for a combined seventy additional pounds for the climb.
Saturday’s climb to the Capital City Club, high atop the Capital City Center was the second for Columbia, but American Lung climbs have been happening many metropolitan areas, including Boston, New York, Denver, and Chicago.
In the end, the stairs were concurred, awards were given out for best times, with many UNDER four minutes, and over thirty thousand dollars was raised between participants, corporate sponsors, and donations.
Plans are already being made for next year’s climb, but they are still taking donations. For more information on the climbs, or to learn how you can help the mission of the American Lung Association, click here.
