COLUMBIA (WACH) --  Families across the Midlands walking in support for South Carolina families affected by autism on Saturday.

Strides for Autism taking place at Finlay Park. Organizers say this walk was aimed at raising awareness of autism spectrum disorders and to raise funds for the South Carolina Autism Society.

According to the SCAS: Autism is a complex neurological disorder that interferes with the development of the brain in reasoning, social interaction and communication skills. Its prevalence rate now places it as one of the three most common developmental disabilities, much more common than Down syndrome. Autism is three to five times more common in males and occurs in all social and ethnic groups.

Mayor Steve Benjamin served as the organizations honorary chair for Saturday's walk.

The group says this is the second of four walks that will be held across the state.

The next couple of walks are as follows: Upstate on April 9, in Charleston on September 10, and in Myrtle Beach on October 8.
