LEXINGTON (WACH)--Lexington Middle School eighth graders learned the dangers of driving Wednesday during a "Shattered Dreams" presentation.
The Lexington County School District One and the town of Lexington Police Department hosts the Shattered Dreams presentation each year before students graduate and head to high school and obtain their drivers licenses.
Wednesday, Catilyn Martin, a senior at Lexington High School, served as guest speaker.
Caitlyn's brother Byron was killed in a car accident in 2007. As part of her senior project, she uses her story in to make a lifelong impact of safe driving on those who hear it.
"Hundreds of people told me they had never buckled up before, they weren't taught to buckle up, said Caityln, "it wasn't something important to them, they didn't see the impact of it, but now they do. They tell me that they buckle up and every time they do they think of him."
Byron was 16 years old when he was driving 75mph around a sharp curve one night and skidded off of the road. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his car. The passenger in the car with Byron was wearing her seatbelt and she lived.
Caitlyn and her family have created Buckle up for Byron stickers that have been distributed to schools in Lexington County.
