CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Flags will be placed on the graves of Confederate dead in Charleston as Confederate Memorial Day is observed in the state where the Civil War began.

Tuesday is officially Confederate Memorial Day, although observances around the state have been held in recent days and will be held through next weekend. The state General Assembly is in recess to mark the day.

Graves in the soldiers' burial ground in Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston are being adorned with Confederate flags.

Observances were also held last weekend at Columbia's Elmwood Cemetery and at the Statehouse.

Last Friday, there was a reading at the Statehouse of the Roll of the Dead, which includes the names of the more than 18,000 South Carolina soldiers who died in the Civil War.
