PICKENS (WHNS) -- Pickens Police Chief Tommy Ellenburg was suspended for 15 days Thursday, according to a news release from city officials.

Officials said they learned that Ellenburg used "racially insensitive and derogatory remarks," and that such conduct will not be tolerated.

Ellenburg was given a final warning and an unpaid suspension, officials said.

City leaders said Ellenburg understands the seriousness of his actions and has apologized.

During Ellenburg's suspension, Assistant Police Chief Rodney Gregory will head the Police Department.
