COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina Supreme Court says some retirees who went back to work for state or local governments will not get refunds on their new payments into the state retirement system.
The State newspaper reported that the decision released Monday applies to retired workers who went back to work in government and had not participated in a special retirement program called TERI.
The justices had ruled in 2006 that 14,000 workers who participated in the Teachers and Employee Retention Incentive program, or TERI, were entitled to have their new payments to the retirement system refunded to them.
But the justices said in the 4-1 decision that about 9,000 workers who had not participated in the TERI program before returning to work were not entitled to the refunds.
