AIKEN (WACH, Fox News) -- Nearly 300 people participated in the Aiken NAACP branch’s Freedom Banquet Friday night.
The guest speaker was Shirley Sherrod. Sherrod made national headlines last year after blogger Andrew Breitbart posted a partial video of Sherrod speaking at a March 2010 NAACP event.
Sherrod was pressured to resign from her position as Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the United States Department of Agriculture, after she was accused of delivering racist remarks at the NAACP event.
As it turns out those remarks were seen taken out of context and Sherrod was actually delivering a speech about rejecting any personal racist ideas.
During Friday night’s banquet Sherrod talked about the incident that tainted her reputation and her life afterwards.
“I’ve gone back to my community working on projects like I’ve always done, reaching out to people and trying to help wherever I’m needed,” says Shirley Sherrod.
Sherrod also commented on the harmony between races at Friday night’s event.
“It’s kind of encouraging to be here and there’s a white president of the NAACP. That’s something I haven’t run into,” says Sherrod.
Sherrod has a lawsuit pending against Breitbart. According to the New York Times the suit was served back in February.
