COLUMBIA (WACH) -- While gas prices seem to be high in the Midlands, they're skyrocketing in other parts of the country.
The average for regular unleaded in Columbia is down about a penny to $3.62 a gallon from yesterday. The state average is also $3.62, while the national average is a whopping $3.86 a gallon.
But some motorists aren't even fortunate enough to be paying that price. Drivers in Orlando saw prices as high as $5.59.
While the pain at the pump continues South Carolina is holding onto one of the top spots for having the lowest gas prices in the country.
According to GasBuddy.com the Palmetto State ranks fourth in the nation.
Michael Fields, Director of the Petroleum Marketers Association says motorists can thank the state's 16 cent gas tax.
"It's always something we have been able to hang our hat on," Fields says. "Even when prices do what they're doing right now, it is some consolation."
Lawmakers haven't raised the 16 cent gas tax since 1987 making it the third lowest in the U.S., according to Fields.
"There is a lot of talk about raising the tax because that money goes towards infrastructure, bridges and roads. I just don't think there is a lot of political will at the State House to do that right now, especially with the way prices are," Fields says.
He adds there's no doubt the current gas prices are still hurting businesses and consumers alike. And there's no guarantee that the state won't hit the $4 mark by summer.
However some experts say the gas prices are peaking.
The average gallon is more than 25 cents off the all-time high of $4.11 set in July 2008, but weakening demand for gasoline and a slower rate of rise in crude oil prices may keep it from hitting that mark, says publisher Trilby Lundberg.
"It is by no means assured that prices will continue rising to reach that level," Lundberg said. "In fact, prices may peak well before the summer driving season. They may even be peaked right now."
