SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Dorchester County officials are considering a cheaper, faster way to add room to the jail.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports officials are looking into the idea of building cells that look like tents. Charlotte, N.C., already is using the polyvinyl fluoride to cover eight, 40-bed units. Dorchester County officials plan to tour that jail next month.
The structures look like a cross between Quonset huts and circus big tops.
Council Chairman Larry Hargett says the fabric buildings would cost about half as much as a traditional cell.
Tray Thompson with Sprung Instant Structures says while the fabric can be cut, its three layers are about a foot thick and the units would be surrounded by fences.
Sheriff L.C. Knight says he's most concerned about durability.
