COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- About two dozen South Carolina schools are launching a bullying prevention program that involves teachers, students and parents working together.
The schools will use the Olweus (ohl-VAY-us) Bullying Prevention Program in a pilot program coordinated by the state Association of School Administrators. An official announcement is set for later this week.
The program begins with students taking an anonymous, online survey about bullying in their school, so intervention efforts can be targeted and problems can be evaluated to determine improvement.
Teachers will attend a three-day training seminar in Greenville that starts Tuesday. They will return to their schools to train others and administer the program.
Experts say children who are bullied are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, and their grades can suffer.
