COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Texting while driving is one step closer to being illegal in the town of Irmo.

The town council endorsed an ordinance at this week's meeting.

Councilman Barry Walker says if caught texting behind the wheel, violators would be fined $500.

The measure awaits final approval next month.

What do you think about driving texting while driving?  Should this be the standard or is it overkill?  Leave a comment below to weigh in.
