COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Sen. Lindsey Graham has vowed to hold up the business of the U.S. Senate until he gets funding for a study to deepen the Port of Charleston.
Graham and U.S. Rep. Tim Scott held a news conference Tuesday in Charleston to discuss funding and the process of deepening the harbor to 50 feet to allow the next generation of larger cargo ships to dock there.
The two Republicans say they are trying to avoid using an earmark to get the $50,000 in federal money needed to do a scoping study for deepening the port. The funding was not included in President Obama's proposed budget earlier this year while a handful of competing harbor projects were.
Georgia's Port of Savannah got $600,000 in the president's budget.
