WELLFORD (WACH, FOX Carolina) -- A Byrnes High School student was killed in a crash near Wellford on Wednesday, three years after his father died in Afghanistan.
The three-car crash happened at the intersection of Fairhill Road and Fort Prince Boulevard at 8 a.m.
The coroner's office said 18-year-old Aaron Hill, a driver of one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. The condition of the two other drivers and their passengers were not immediately available, the coroner's office said.
The Associated Press reports the crash happened on a stretch of highway named in memory of Hill's father.
Hill was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the coroner's office said.
Troopers blocked off the area while they investigated the crash.
Spartanburg County School District 5 called the crash a tragedy for the high school and the community.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron's family," the school district said in a statement to the media. "We are committed to doing everything we can to assist the family during this time of tragedy."
According to the district, Hill's father, Sgt. Shawn Hill, a 1989 Byrnes graduate, died while serving in Afghanistan in January 2008.
