CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A national conference on the causes and consequences of civil wars is being held in South Carolina as the 150th anniversary of the first shots of the Civil War approaches.

The conference sponsored by the National Council for History Education opens Thursday.

In addition to conference sessions that continue through the weekend, the event will also offer tours of area sites including The Citadel, Drayton Hall and Patriots Point.

Conference organizers say the annual events are places where those who both teach and want to learn about history can come together.

The 150th anniversary of the firing on Fort Sumter which opened the Civil War is April 12.
