NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- An 87-year-old former Connecticut man has pleaded guilty to cheating the state out of more than $300,000 in unemployment benefits over a 14-year span.
Federal prosecutors say Ralph Hymans pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in New Haven to one count of mail fraud. Hymans formerly lived in Westport and now lives in Summerville, S.C.
Authorities say Hymans told the state Department of Labor every year from 1995 to 2009 that he was repeatedly employed and repeatedly let go by a business called Monroe Management. He continued to collect even after he moved to South Carolina by opening post office box in Fairfield. In all, he stole nearly $313,000.
He faces up to 20 years at sentencing on June 14. His lawyer intends to ask for a lighter sentence.
