RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH) -- Officials say a body was pulled from the Wateree River in Lower Richland County late Thursday afternoon.

Richland County deputies say 59-year-old James Richardson was fishing when he leaned forward and fell into the water.

Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins says Richardson drowned near Highway 278 (Garners Ferry).

Witnesses say he came back up only one time as he was trying to reach shore.

The Columbia Fire Department, Sumter Fire Department, Richland County Sheriff's Department and South Carolina DNR were involved in the search.
