Columbia, SC (WACH) - Authorities have identified the victim of a multiple car wreck on I-77 South that shut down the interstate for hours.

Richland County coroner Gary Watts says Allen Garner, 34, died shortly after midnight Wednesday when he was hit by several vehicles.  It happened between mile markers three and four about a mile south of Bluff Road.  According to Watts, Garner's vehicle was struck from behind in the wreck and he got out of his car to check on the other driver behind him.

A portion of I-77 South was shut down for several hours Wednesday morning while investigators worked the scene.  Authorities rerouted traffic to Bluff Road.  The interstate has since reopened.
