MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's state-owned utility is talking about selling power or an ownership position in its share of two nuclear reactors it is building with South Carolina Electric & Gas.

Santee Cooper said in a news release Monday that it is negotiating with the Orlando Utilities Commission for 5 percent to 10 percent of its portion of the new plants' capacity.

Santee Cooper and SCE&G jointly operate a reactor near Jenkinsville. If approved by federal regulators, the new facilities would go online in 2016.

Santee Cooper spokeswoman Mollie Gore says the negotiations come as the utility re-evaluates its long-term power needs. Santee Cooper's largest customer, Central Electric Power Cooperative, has said it will reduce its power purchases from Santee Cooper by 1,000 megawatts beginning in 2013.
