COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Green is for St. Patrick's Day, but for some USC students Thursday was all about going green and getting their hands dirty in the process.

Student leaders teamed up with the university's Offices of Sustainability and Facilities Management to go through the trash...literally.

It was all a part of a school-wide waste audit.  They went through dumpsters to determine what students consume and what can be recycled.

"The university and the president are committed to making this a more sustainable campus and setting an example for South Carolina and recycling is one of the most obvious and public profile things you can do," says Michael Kolman.

Organizers hope this audit will eventually lead to more recycling efforts on campus.
