COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The House budget plan gives South Carolina's public residential schools for talented, troubled and hearing- and visually-impaired students a financial boost after years of budget cuts.
The Ways and Means Committee's plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1 directs the schools to use that money to bring enrollment back to capacity. The plan will be debated on the House floor this week.
The state's five special schools are the Governor's School for Science and Math, Governor's School for the Arts, Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School, John de la Howe School and School for the Deaf and the Blind.
School leaders say they're thrilled at the prospect of being able to foster the talents and turnaround the lives of more students. They hope the House plan stays intact.
