COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has created an inspector general position aimed at cutting fraud, mismanagement and waste in Cabinet agencies.

Haley said Friday she has appointed George Schroeder to the new position. He will run a small auditing agency that will use existing financial staff in Cabinet agencies to run the auditing work.

Schroeder retired from the Legislative Audit Council two years ago as executive director. That state agency handles legislators' requests for agency reviews aimed at finding the same type of financial problems. But that agency doesn't handle requests from the governor.

He has also been in charge of Haley's fiscal crisis task force. The Associated Press reported last month Schroeder's group met for months with no public notice.
