CHESTERFIELD, S.C. (AP) -- The office of South Carolina's top prosecutor has asked state police to investigate the shootings of two dogs found dead at a Chesterfield County landfill.

Documents obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press show that Attorney General Alan Wilson has asked the State Law Enforcement Division to probe the shooting deaths.

Animal rescuers said Saturday they had found two dogs believed to be from a local shelter shot in the head and buried at a landfill. Whitney Knowlton of Last Chance Animal Rescue Fund said she thinks the dogs that were found Friday were from the county-run shelter and were killed by animal control officers.

Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker oversees animal control and has said his officers would investigate.

Neither state police nor Parker returned messages Tuesday.
