COLUMBIA (WACH) -- State Lawmakers are crossing party lines to change the way money is raised for election campaigns.
Democratic State Senator Vincent Sheheen and Republican State Senators Jake Knotts announced a bi-partisan plan to reform South Carolina's campaign finance laws.
They are submitting a bill that would ban leadership PACS in the Senate. Those are political action committees started by an elected official which can accept contributions from lobbyists and those that are larger than a normal campaign account.
"We are not accusing anyone of breaking the rules right now," Sen. Sheheen says. "We are saying the rules need to change. We need to have a clear line so elected officials can say to their constituents I don't have more than one fund I've raised campaign cash into. You can look into my campaign disclosures and see what is going on so people have that transparency and visibility they deserve."
The lawmakers were joined by John Crangel from the Watchdog group Common Cause to unveil their proposal to ban Leadership PACS. Those are political action committees created by members of Congress to show their support for a candidate.
